Oslo Science City met with Næringsminister Vestre on Wednesday 8 June. Among the short presentation given to the Minister, illustrating the link between research and innovation, BigInsight director Frigessi presented our centre. As the first “AI” centre in Norway, we work with private and public partners by developing methods and models which give value for the partner. Frigessi mentioned our work with Hydro, with DNV, with DNB, and with FHI on COVID-19. Vestre was interested and mentioned that he wants to learn more about BigInsight as an important example of research based innovation.

BigInsights Per August Moen og Martin Tveten vant KRAFTHACK 2022!
7.-8. mars deltok Per August Moen, som er dScience-stipendiat på Matematisk Institutt (MI), og Martin Tveten, som disputerte på MI i fjor, og nå jobber på Norsk Regnesentral, i et hackathon arrangert av Statkraft, Energi Norge og Unifai. Selv om ingen av de to tidligere har deltatt i noe hackathon, gikk de rett til topps og endte på en delt førsteplass, etter å ha utkonkurrert 16 deltagende lag. Universitetet i Oslo gjorde det svært godt, og hadde tre lag blant de fem beste.

Oppgaven var knyttet til analyse av sensordata fra Norges største vannkraftverk, Kvilldal, som ligger 1.5 km inne i fjellet og produserer 3 000 GWh energi hvert år. Invitasjonen til konkurransen lød: «I dette hackathonet inviterer vi innovative tenkere til å sette sin ekspertise på prøve og dele hvordan de vil bruke datavitenskap for å støtte overvåking av komplekst utstyr.»
Martin har jobbet med å utvikle metoder for slik overvåkning basert på sensordata, siden han startet på en masteroppgave for BigInsight i 2016. Doktorgradsavhandlingen hans om «Scalable change and anomaly detection in cross-correlated data», ble også skrevet for BigInsight, med data og problemstillinger fra våre partnere ABB og DNV. Per August startet på sin PhD i fjor høst, på beslektede problemstillinger, med Martin som medveileder. Begges PhD-veileder Ingrid Glad på MI er stolt: «Selv om Per August og Martin ble overrasket over å vinne, ble ikke jeg så overrasket. De er begge utrolig dyktige og kreative, og utgjør et strålende team. Veldig gøy at deres statistiske tilnærming førte til seier!»
Per August sier at stemningen minnet om å være på LAN-party i ungdommen, men at KRAFTHACK-opplevelsen var både morsom og lærerik, og full av overraskelser og utfordringer. «Vi slet litt i starten med å få kontroll på 2 millioner observasjoner. Da var det selvfølgelig ekstra stas at våre prediksjoner til slutt traff best!»

Debatt i P2 om utnyttelse av norske helsedata
Arnoldo Frigessi og Camilla Stoltenberg deltok den 12. november i en debatt i regi av litteraturhuset i Trondheim og Senter for digitalt liv om norske helsedata, som iblant omtales som en grullgruve.

Today at the 28th Nordic Conference in Mathematical Statistics (Tromsø), Arnoldo Frigessi was awarded the Sverdrup prize (the Norwegian Statistical Association's research prize).
