Title: A brief history of deep neural networks
Abstract:
Deep neural networks have received great attention and become a popular machine learning tool for a range of applications. The historic roots of deep neural networks is a story of great early expectations, successes and failures, bitter disagreements, and a few people who never ceased to believe in the potential of the connectionist learning paradigm. In this talk, I will present some examples from this history and give my take on what motivated the transition from simpler neural networks to deep neural networks.
