Speaker: Ville Mustonen, Professor, Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Programme, Department of Computer Science and Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki and the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology, Finland
We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Ville Mustonen will be the guest speaker of our upcoming virtual joint Sven Furberg Seminar in Bioinformatics and Statistical Genomics and OCBE Biostatistical Seminar on Thursday June 4th at 14:30 through Zoom (see Zoom info below).
Prof. Ville Mustonen, Professor, Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Programme, Department of Computer Science and Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki and the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology, Finland, will present the lecture entitled "Using computational methods and evolutionary theory to combat drug resistance."
Abstract
Biology is undergoing a data explosion. This creates great opportunities such as developing personalised therapies and detailed understanding of evolution. However, as computing power grows slower than ability to generate data, it is essential to develop powerful algorithms as well as theory to analyse these data. Combating drug resistance is a particularly urgent focal point to leverage both new data and methods. Cells and organisms evolve to better survive in their environments and to adapt to new challenges. Such dynamics manifest in a particularly problematic way with the evolution of drug resistance, which is increasingly recognised as a key challenge for global health. In this lecture I present our collaborative work on evolutionary theory based ideas for therapy optimisation.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the seminar.
